President's Estate Goes Solar

The plant is expected to generate 0.95 million units (MUs) of green energy annually will be sufficient to light more than 650 homes for over 25 years while reducing the carbon footprint of around 316 Metric Tons (MT) of carbon footprint every year

President Pranab Mukherjee, today inaugurated 668 KWp Solar Power Plant at President’s Estate jointly executed by Tata Power Delhi Distribution (Tata Power-DDL) and Rural Electrification Corporation.

"The plant is expected to generate 0.95 million units (MUs) of green energy annually will be sufficient to light more than 650 homes for over 25 years while reducing the carbon footprint of around 316 Metric Tons (MT) of carbon footprint every year. The initiative in line with Climate Change Agenda for Delhi and the National Solar Mission; Set up as part of the National Action Plan on Climate Change (NAPCC," Tata Power DDL said in a statement.

The Solar Power Plant project includes 7 solar plants installed with a total capacity of 668 KWp in Phase I. The Project has been carried out in collaboration with Rural Electrification Corporation (REC) with Tata Power-DDL being the Technology Partner for the project. The Phase II of the project would add another 500 KWp plant to the estate.

Speaking at the inauguration, Praveer Sinha, CEO & MD , Tata Power Delhi Distribution said, “ I thank the Hon’ble President for inaugurating the Solar Power Plant at the President’s Estate and thus encouraging the country to to take bigger strides towards promotion of clean and green power. I believe, only clean and green energy is a guarantee for a sustainable development and we all must opt for renewable sources of power to light up our lives.”


Under the current Presidency, the President’s Secretariat has taken various initiatives to make the President’s Estate a Smart Township. The Solar Power Plant project at the President’s Estate has been envisioned in this regard to provide clean energy to the estate as the conventional ways of electricity generation such as from coal, gas and water cause high degree of pollution. The initiative is also in line with the Climate Change Agenda for Delhi and the National Solar Mission set up as part of the National Action Plan on Climate Change (NAPCC).

Tata Power-DDL has been associated with various initiatives at Rashtrapati Bhavan in the past like Energy Efficiency, Energy Audit, Demand Side Management (DSM) and Solar Projects while some major initiatives in the pipeline include ESCO Services and Smart Metering.

During the ceremony, Mukherjee also felicitated the winning students of the Tata Power-DDL Urja Mela 2017.
