Mumbai Metro One launches multi-purpose smart card

It will enable commuters to have one card to act as both debit/credit card and metro smart card and prior consent of applicants will be obtained by the banks and credit card issuers for the facility before the issuance of the card

MUMBAI, Feb 25: Mumbai Metro One, a subsidiary of Reliance Infrastructure along with leading banks like ICICI, State Bank of India and its subsidiary SBI Card today launched a combo card which can be used as debit, credit and metro smart card. "Mumbai Metro One (MMOPL), through a tie up with the largest private sector bank ICICI and State Bank of India and its subsidiary SBI Card, has launched combo card (that) will enable commuters to have one card to act as both debit/credit card and metro smart card," a release issued here said. The facility will be available in the entire Automatic Fare Collection (AFC) system of all the 12 stations on the Versova-Andheri-Ghatkopar corridor. In December last year, the company launched online recharge services which will be available to the smart card users with over 50 banks. Through this service, commuters will be able to pay from more than 50 banks through internet banking, debit cards and credit cards for online recharge. "The combo card facility is a leap towards the unified card system in urban transportation, launched for the first time in the city. The commuters will enjoy more seamless travel experience as it will save their time from queue and avoid hassle of recalling the balance of the value stored in their cards," MMOPL spokesperson said. The combo card will come with an in?built functionality of auto reload wherein the intelligence has been incorporated into the AFC gates and as soon as the AFC system reads that the balance in a card is equal or less than Rs 50, it will reload the card automatically by Rs 200. The amount reloaded will be deducted from the credit card account or bank account linked with the card in the back end, the release said. The company said prior consent of applicants will be obtained by the banks and credit card issuer for this facility before the issuance of this card. Commuters will also receive an acknowledgment of the transaction from the respective banks on their registered mobile number phones, it said. "Travelling cost through the combo cards will be similar to the metro smart cards and the commuters will avail similar discounts however the users of the combo cards can also enjoy loyalty points from the ICICI, State Bank of India and SBI Card as per the reward structure that may be applicable," the spokesperson added.
