SHILLONG, Aug 5: The Meghalaya government today said it is implementing the building bylaws in all major towns in the state identified under the master plan area and where major constructions works are taking place. The announcement came in the wake of the Opposition Hills State People's Democratic Party (HSPDP) serving a deadline to the government to withdraw the notification and warning of a protest. "For the safety of the people, we will implement the bylaws... and we go by the Act," Urban Affairs Department Principal Secretary P Naik told reporters here. "It is applicable to all master plan areas of the state. It is being enforced in Tura, Jowai and wherever we have master plan scheme area, besides Shillong city," he said. According to the official, it was also enforced in areas wherever the department identified building activities were prone to disaster and development was taking unregulated. Naik said "Huge construction is also taking place in rural areas. We will bring this to the notice of the government." The announcement was made under the direction of Chief Minister Mukul Sangma who was on tour of the Garo Hills region and on a day when the deadline ended.
