From City of Ghats to a Smart City

Varanasi which is among the oldest cities in India famous for its Hundreds of Ghats, Temples and Kala Bhawan is set to be developed as Smart City. Government has already moved a budget of 321 Crores for development of Varanasi as Smart City.

Speaking at the BW Businessworld National Smart Cities Conclave, Suresh Khanna, Hon’ble Minister for Urban Development, Uttar Pradesh spoke on progress of Smart Cities mission in the State of Uttar Pradesh and specially on How can we turn this historical city into a Smart City.

We have rolled out RFPs for Development of Command and Control Centre, Smart Parking, Water management, Hospitals and Waste Management in Varanasi. We will be starting the work of projects within short period of time- Dr Nitin Bansal, Municipal Commissioner, Varanasi.

He also added that, “We are trying to create an ecosystem where not only a city develops, but an individual develops too. Government of Uttar Pradesh is focussed on completing the projects which were stated under Prime Minister’s Smart Cities. We are working towards developing this city into a Smart City keeping in mind its heritage and cultural background.”

Representatives from Government of Jammu & Kashmir, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh and various other states presented their key innovations for the Smart Cities mission.

For the first time, in Varanasi, experts from World Bank, Embassy of Japan and Municipal Commissioners from so many cities gathered together to also showcase the different innovation done in their states and which can be implemented in the Varanasi too.

Top Players like Dell, CISCO, HPE, Hikvision, Corporation Bank, Yes Bank and various other presented their ideas and offerings to the mission.
