Electric Vehicles: The ride of sustainability for smart cities

The biggest reason for EVs to be popular is that it had a positive impact on the environment and contributes to a healthier planet. It is also the reason by EVs have been pegged as one of the major pillars of urbanization in smart cities. They revolutionize transport and fulfill every travel need within a city. Because transport in a city is important to mobilize citizens and facilitate progress EVs become essential and effective in playing several beneficial roles.

Electric solutions are taking over the world one wonder at a time. Innovation within the electric solutions sector is excelling towards making our smart cities more and more sustainable. One such innovation is the Electric Vehicles segment, where possibilities have been boundless. It has received wide global interest and investment. The entry of big players from the vehicle industry and the electronic manufacturing industry has put its value at $162.34 billion as of 2019.

Government and regulatory bodies have entered the scene and began offering subsidies as well standardization to suit the environment and quality requirements. Incentives to EV manufacturers have also been introduced and improved over a short period of time. There are special benefits for those who like to set up an entire manufacturing unit or plant and operations to develop an EV in their respective countries. One of the most popular and talked about companies is Tesla. It is recognized as an automotive brand for its innovation and stylish design.

While there are studies conducted in the self-driving space EVs continue to evolve in their performance and technological aspects. There are developed countries that have already insisted n the use of self-driving public transport vehicles such as metros, buses and trains. Autonomous public transport in these nations has created a possibility of new advancements that not only affect lifestyle but also transport efficiency. Research also proves that EVs is the best hope we have in making the planet greener and the air less polluted. The EVs and the advancement in their technology make it clear that EVs are here to stay and continue making a positive impact. In addition to controlling and reducing carbon emissions, several other factors ascertain its impact on the environment improvement mission globally.

On the contrary, to all its resolute benefits Electric Vehicles can be energy-consuming monsters. For example, the US could use 25% more energy than it uses now if its citizens began to drive electric passenger vehicles. It translates to more energy production for the sake of consumption. It also means that there will be a steep rise in energy production plants and a serious up-gradation of transmission network systems.

It becomes necessary to creatively find solutions to avoid a certain loft of carbon production and use resources expertly. It is the need of the hour to adopt research investments within this area. The experts need to be empowered to discover and formulate solutions that will help in maximum usage of resources given their scarcity. Currently, the mining industry assists in the production of EV batteries. It has resulted in the exploitation of mining for resources and mining sites including its labor. Experts have advised smart city aspirants to use sustainable transportation for a better future. Until combustible engines are replaced by battery-powered cars for which energy resources are cleaner and sustainable.

Another solution for smart cities to reach a better sustainable solution could be to reduce reliance on personal transportation. The shift from personal transportation to public and other beneficial ways can help the environment and the replacement of traditional personal transportation. It will also create a space in time for passenger vehicle options to change to electric options which will consequently result in a dramatic change in emission rates.

The upcoming and established smart cities need to improve their infrastructure to include EV charging in their development plans. We, unfortunately, do not have any smart city visionaries that can make significant contributions in the autonomous vehicles segment, conventional EV charging must be used across cities of the world. While there are advancements in technology the practicality of it is also vital for execution and effective working. It may also risk more pollution which defies the purpose of the smart cities and EV innovation.

The ongoing pandemic has shown that lockdown situations have considerably reduced carbon emissions and controlled pollutants. According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), the global energy-related CO2 emissions dropped by 4.8% in 2020. One of the significant contributing factors was that because road transport on the low the global fuel demand was reduced by 50%. Major auto manufactures have announced notable investments in the EV sector.

It is clear that the world is speeding towards sustainable electric transportation as well as greener solutions for facilitating transportation. The focus must now turn to make EVs and their adoption accessible and convenient.
