There are many forms of freedom that citizens of India possess, such as Freedom of Speech and Expression, or the Freedom of Residence and Assembly. These give us the right to exercise our free thoughts and visions and give us citizens our own personal sovereignty.

However, there are a number of responsibilities that come attached to freedoms. As citizens, it is our moral duty to recognize these responsibilities and their purposes. This enables us to make intelligent decisions that are in favour of the entire community at large, as well as mould responsible citizenship.

It is necessary for the government to implement checks on citizen freedom in the interest of society as a whole. There are multiple examples in multiple countries at multiple points in time where the misuse of these freedoms has led to untoward incidents and disruption of general law and order. There need to be a set of guidelines and laws in place that prevent these outliers while maintaining a general level of citizen freedom and autonomy.

Deterrents and penalties for lawbreaking are also important components of the check system. If citizens understand the consequences of their unlawful actions, it helps keep order, as well as maintain transparency between the enforcing agency and the population. This also needs to incorporate a feedback measure from the citizens, to keep tabs on the effectiveness and proper use of these enforcing powers.

As citizens, the onus falls on us to recognize our duty in maintaining and following these checks. Acceptance of restrictions for the greater good is a part of living in a healthy democracy. However, it is also important to be aware of rights and responsibilities, and report any incidents that cannot stand under them. This is an important part of being a smart and informed citizen.
