NEW DELHI, February 10: The New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) was today given the Smart Project Award at the 3rd Smart City Summit in Mumbai. "During the summit, the Smart City Council is awarding the cities which have been selected for the Smart City mission by Urban Development Ministry," NDMC said in a statement here. The NDMC area, home to the high and mighty of the country, has been selected among 20 cities as part of the first phase of the Urban Development Ministry's Smart City initiative, enabling it to receive funds of Rs 500 crore for various projects. The civic body will get funding of Rs 200 crore in the first year and the remaining funds will be released over four subsequent years. NDMC had allocated over Rs 400 crore for various projects under the Smart City plan in its budget for 2016-17. The projects to be undertaken by NDMC have been divided into two broad categories -- 29 area-based projects and nine pan-city projects. One major initiative under the area-based projects will be transformation of electricity poles into 'smart poles' featuring LEDs with incident-driven controllers, communication infrastructure, Wi-Fi access points and air-quality and noise- pollution sensors. -PTI
